ExoSkeleton Magazine Cover Photoshoot

Today I used the Green Screen Room to do a Photo Shoot with Ben Wade the media technician over the course of about half an hour.

We used a leather biker jacket which he brought from home, an old pair of Aviator Sunglasses which I found lying around in my room and a plastic M9 Pistol prop of some sort which I noticed in the technician room.

The gun was actually broken and we had to use sellotape to hold it together. Even then, the gun could only be viewed from either the front, or the right hand side as there was another piece of the chamber missing entirely on the left side [shown below].

We used the 50mm lens camera and I have both JPEG and .CRM (raw) formats.

Here are the JPEG versions of the original shots:

Note of casting:

With the help of John, I was able to arrange a photo shoot in the green room with 'Ben' the media technician.

It will be during period 2 on Monday the 1st of December 2014. I have reccomended the kind of clothing I hope for him to be able to wear and provided some pictures and music videos of Kavinsky - the artist who played a huge part in founding the genre of Retro Wave that my magazine 'Exoskeleton' is themed on.

I also have a pair aviator sunglasses for the shoot as well.

(I have to make sure that he doesn't look too much like Kavinsky or it will become obvious plagiarism.)

Edit: We were unable to do do the shoot on monday morning, but were able to do it on tuesday afternoon between 3:00 PM and 3:45 PM.

Exoskeleton masthead testing

I was testing the background removal on my masthead. I quickly copied a relevant image onto a layer behind to use while finding an optimal transparency level in which there was minimal white remaining in the writing layer, but the greyer shades of black were not corroded away. I chose 60/255

However, while doing this I found that black and white actually looked interesting and added an unexpected noir feel, which given the Retro, Sci-Fi theme of the music which it portrays, could easily achieve a 'tech-noir' feel

My Magazine Price

Look at magazines within your genre:

  • Find out Price - £3.99?
  • Find out whether it's monthly or weekly
  • Find out how many pages
  • Find out if it's subscribe-able/has subscription offers

There are no magazines based specifically on this genre.

The audience for this genre is relatively Niche

Due to this, I think that it would be a monthly magazine.

This would mean it would probably be a fairly small 50 Page magazine as there simply isn't much to talk about.

This would require it to be fairly cheap - I'd estimate around £4.99

  • In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
  • How does your media product represent particular social groups?
  • What kind of media product represent particular social groups?
  • What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
  • Who would be the audience for your media product?
  • How did you attract/address your audience?
  • What have you learned about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
  • Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learned in the progression from it to the full product?

Music Magazine Brief

Preliminary Exercise: Using DTP and an image manipulation program, produce the front page of a new school/college magazine, featuring a photograph of a student in medium close -up plus some appropriately laid-out text and a masthead. Additionally you must produce a mock-up of the layout of the contents page to demonstrate their grasp of DTP

Main Task: The front page, contents and double page spread of a new music magazine. All images and text used must be original, produced by you - minimum of four images.

Presentation of your work:
The presentation of the research, planning and evaluation may take the form of any one, or combination of two or more, of the following:

  • A presentation using slideshow software such as PowerPoint;
  • a blog;
  • a podcast;

Evaluation Answers

Evaluation Answers

1. "What have you learn->ED<- from completing this task?"
If I have learned anything from this task it is that when under a limited timescale, one minute you have forever and the next, you are looking death in the face as your deadline is only a couple of days away!

It is imperative that you start early and do your work at a level of detail that is responsive and realistic to your allocated timescale.

(also Ctrl + T rather than Edit > Transform > Scale/Rotate/Skew is the best thing since ever)

2. "How have you used technology?"
I have been entirely dependent on Photoshop and the cameras that we have used for this. I have also sourced four images from the internet. I feel like through trial and error, the use of new tools and experimentation with keybinds, I have 'Leveled Up' in my Photoshopping skills and am now more confident with it than before.

3. "What conventions have you used and why?"
I have used many of the same conventions which I used during Media Production in Year 10, two years ago and getting re-acquainted with them. I have also developed some new ones, such as using the color picker and gradient tool as well as a feathered eraser to create the illusion of a clear sky continuing above and beyond the top of the image.

4. "What would you change if you were to do this task again?"
I would have begun taking photos earlier, allowing me to get straight to photoshopping and I would have arranged to do it at the same time as everyone else, giving me more people to include on my magazine contents photos.
